Flashes: A New Instagram Alternative on Bluesky

A new photo-sharing app called Flashes has officially launched on the App Store, offering an alternative to Instagram. In just 24 hours, the app was downloaded nearly 30,000 times, attracting users with its familiar Instagram-like experience. Flashes allows users to upload up to four photos or videos, each up to a minute long.

Powered by Bluesky’s Technology

Flashes was created by Berlin-based developer Sebastian Vogelsang and runs on the AT Protocol, the same technology that powers Bluesky, a decentralized social networking platform with over 32 million users. Because of this, posts made on Flashes are also visible on Bluesky, giving users a much wider audience beyond just the app itself.

More Freedom and Custom Feeds

Unlike Instagram, where content is heavily controlled by an algorithm, Flash users can explore and customize their feeds using Bluesky’s 50,000+ custom feeds. The app also includes built-in feeds that showcase top posts and the latest posts from across Bluesky’s network.

Features for Photographers and Artists

Flashes is designed with photographers in mind. One standout feature is “Portfolio Mode,” which allows users to carefully curate their profiles by selecting which photos and videos appear first. This helps photographers highlight their best work when others visit their profiles.

Additionally, Flashes includes built-in photo filters, similar to Instagram, making it easy for users to edit and enhance their images. The app is also introducing curated feeds for artists, starting with content from the Blacksky community.

Growing Popularity and Future Plans

Since its launch, Flashes has reached over 40,500 downloads and continues to grow. Developer Sebastian Vogelsang has been in discussions with investors about potential funding and is open to new opportunities. Flashes is one of several exciting new apps being built on the Bluesky platform, offering users more control and creative freedom in social media.
