Sony Raises PS5 Prices by Up to 25% in UK, Europe & Australia

Sony has announced a significant price increase for its PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in various international markets, citing persistent global economic pressures. The revised pricing, which takes effect starting Monday, affects customers in Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

In a statement published on the official PlayStation blog, Sony explained that the decision was influenced by rising inflation, currency fluctuations, and an uncertain global economic outlook. Describing it as a “tough decision,” Sony acknowledged the impact this move may have on gamers but emphasized the need to adapt to market realities.

Here’s a breakdown of the updated pricing for the PS5 Digital Edition:

  • Europe: From €449 to €499
  • United Kingdom: From £389 to £430
  • Australia: From AUD 649 to AUD 749
  • New Zealand: From NZD 749 to NZD 859

Notably, prices for the standard PS5 with a disc drive and the PS5 Pro will remain unchanged in these regions.

Interestingly, the United States—Sony’s largest gaming market—has been spared from this price increase. Industry experts believe this could be a strategic move to protect market share in the U.S., especially given the volatile effects of new U.S. tariffs on electronics and semiconductors.

Christopher Dring, editor-in-chief of The Game Business, told the BBC that Sony may be raising prices globally to maintain affordability and competitiveness in the U.S. “The era when game consoles went down in price over time is certainly over,” he remarked.

This move follows Nintendo’s announcement of a delay in the Switch 2 launch, with pre-orders suspended due to uncertainties surrounding U.S. tariffs and demand forecasts. As global manufacturers continue to wrestle with inflation, supply chain disruption, and shifting trade policies, gamers may face higher prices across the board for both hardware and accessories.
