Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, tweeted on Wednesday that he met with Apple CEO Tim Cook at the company’s headquarters.
After Musk went on a tweet storm in which he accused Apple of threatening to pull the Twitter app from the App Store and posted and then deleted a meme suggesting he would rather “go to war” than pay Apple’s 30% platform fees, the meeting represents a significant de-escalation.
“Good conversation. Among other things, we resolved the misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being removed from the App Store,” Musk tweeted. “Tim was clear that Apple never considered doing so.”
Musk also shared a short video of a reflecting pool in the middle of Apple Park in Cupertino, California, in a tweet.
On Monday, Musk wrote a number of tweets in which he criticized Apple and argued that Apple’s App Store moderation policies violated free speech, a complaint that was later echoed by Republican lawmakers. He considered the possibility of making his own smartphone over the weekend.
Additionally, Musk resented Apple’s fees, which take between 15% and 30% of digital sales made by iPhone apps. If Musk is successful in his plan to significantly increase Twitter subscription revenue, Apple stands to benefit from Twitter if those features are sold through the Twitter iPhone app.
