Tesla has confirmed that the production of its 4680 battery cells has reached a point where it can produce more than 1,000 cars per week.
As Tesla’s first cell designed from the ground up, the 4680 battery cell is a novel design that was unveiled in 2020.
Tesla had previously been involved in cell development, but his primary focus was on fine-tuning the chemistry of the 18650 and 2170 cell formats that were already in use.
Now, Tesla planned to create its own cell with a tableless design and a much larger footprint. Additionally, Tesla intended to partner with existing cell manufacturers to manufacture the cells.
That was more than two years ago, and we haven’t seen much of Tesla’s own 4680 battery cell production in that time.
Tesla has adhered strictly to its manufacturing data for battery cells.
The last authority information point that Tesla delivered was the initial 1 million cells finished at its pilot plant in Fremont, and that was back in February 2022.
Tesla has only made a few statements about percentage increases in its production rate since then without confirming the actual rate.
Today, Tesla provided the first official confirmation of the actual rate of production, stating that the team had produced 868,000 4680 battery cells in the previous week.
That is sufficient to produce more than 1,000 Model Y automobiles. At Gigafactory Texas, the cells are used to make one kind of Model Y vehicle with a structural battery pack.
The automaker is establishing higher volume production at the Texas plant in addition to the pilot plant in Fremont in order to shorten the supply chain.
