Ford has long offered a variety of V8 engines, but two models stand out for their versatility: the 7.3-liter Megazilla, an upgraded version of the Godzilla V8 used in Super Duty pickups, and the 5.5-liter Coyote. 0-liter, found in the Dark Horse Mustang. Recognizing the growing demand for high-performance engines, Ford Performance has introduced major upgrades to these engines, improving their power and adaptability for both competition and street use.
Megazilla 2.0: The Mighty One
Building on the success of the Megazilla, which debuted in 2023, Ford is bringing even more performance to the Megazilla 2.0. This version features high-performance components such as forged pistons, high-strength connecting rods, a steel crankshaft, polished cylinder heads, and upgraded valve porting and springs. The big change is the addition of the 3.0-liter Gen 6 Whipple Supercharger, which boosts engine output to over 1,000 horsepower, a significant jump from the naturally aspirated version’s 615 horsepower.
This high-output engine is specifically designed for competitive use, such as desert racing and drag racing, so it’s not suitable for street-legal applications.
An Animal That Can Live on the Street: The Supercharged Coyote
For those looking for street-legal performance, Ford has swapped out the Dark Horse Mustang’s 5.0-liter Coyote engine. Upgrades include a 3.0-liter supercharger, an added engine control module, and other performance tweaks, delivering over 800 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque. That puts it in direct competition with Shelby American’s GT350.
Designed for straight-line speed and track performance, this engine offers a balance of power and driveability. It also comes with a two-year or 24,000-mile limited warranty, giving buyers added peace of mind.
Easy Installation and Availability
Both the Megazilla 2.0 and the supercharged Coyote V8 are designed for easy installation, thanks to the harnesses in Ford Performance’s intuitive control package. These engines are also available in Ford race car components, ensuring high reliability and performance.
Ford will make these upgraded engines available through Ford dealers and Ford Performance Parts in late 2025. While pricing hasn’t been announced, they won’t be cheap: the naturally aspirated Megazilla costs approximately $23,000, while the fourth-generation Coyote V8 costs approximately $20,000. It costs around $15,000.
