This month’s Patch Tuesday lineup should provide much-needed respite to those of you who have had issues with Windows 11 24H2. The most recent upgrades, which were released yesterday, aim to fix most of the remaining flaws, but not all of them.
Particularly targeted at the Windows 11 2024 version is KB5046617. It fixes a number of well-known problems that have irritated and frustrated Windows users.
First, an issue that was preventing a few devices from connecting to the Internet has been fixed. When a DHCP server malfunctioned, it made it impossible for users to join to a network by providing them with a working IP address.
An incorrect Task Manager count is fixed by another patch. When attempting to organize open processes by type, this problem caused the Processes tab to always display zero.
An issue where a black screen appeared when Alt+Tab was used to swap windows is also in the corrected list. Although an earlier patch was intended to have fixed this issue, some users complained that it continued. I hope this time it’s permanently fixed.
After using the Windows Disk Cleanup program to get rid of any remaining cache files, another bug that was apparently already fixed showed the incorrect amount of free storage. For a thorough and definitive fix, this problem might require additional patching.
Another patch resolves a problem with the Linux version of the Windows Subsystem that prevented users from accessing their development drives. WSL is a virtual environment that allows you to run Linux within Windows and is primarily intended for developers and IT professionals. Code, databases, and other materials can be stored on the Dev Drive, which is a dedicated storage space.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 24H2 known issues and notifications website now lists other issues as resolved. One fixed a problem where a Voicemeeter app crashed and displayed a blue screen. Another fixed a bug that might cause fingerprint sensors to stop functioning after locking your device.
Even while that seems like a good number of bug fixes, Microsoft still has other problems with Windows 24H2 that need to be fixed.
On certain Asus PCs, the most recent update fails to install and instead displays a blue screen. Certain programs may become sluggish when using the camera. Safe Exam Browser is an application that doesn’t open. Using the program Easy Anti-Cheat may cause a blue screen. Some drivers for Intel Smart Sound Technology may not work properly. Additionally, the driving game Asphalt 8 could occasionally stop working.
Even while Microsoft claims that just a small percentage of individuals are impacted by each bug, the sheer volume of them has proven to be a barrier to the 2024 update’s delivery. For impacted PCs, the corporation was even compelled to delay the update until the necessary modifications could be implemented. In the upcoming major Patch Tuesday deployment, hopefully, the remaining flaws will be fixed.
In addition to fixing Windows 11 24H2, the November update fixes almost 100 security flaws and includes new features like a customized Copilot keyboard key. The update ought to come up for installation on its own. If not, check for updates by going to Settings, choosing Windows Update, and then clicking the option.
