Nelly Korda, an American, won the Chevron Championship in Texas by a margin of two strokes, earning her a remarkable fifth consecutive tournament victory and her second major championship.
With her victory at The Woodlands, the 25-year-old tied the record for the most straight LPGA wins. The only other women to have accomplished the feat were Nancy Lopez in 1978 and Annika Sorenstam (2004–05).
Korda had a final round 69 in Houston to complete the event on 13 under, one stroke behind South Korean leader Haeran Ryu and Canadian Brooke Henderson going into the final round of the first major of the year.
After a final round of 69, Maja Stark of Sweden finished two shots behind the lead. American Lauren Coughlin and Henderson shared third place on 10 under, while Ryu finished fifth with a two-over-par 74.
Korda, who finished the final round with five birdies and two bogeys, was asked how she managed to win five tournaments in a row. She responded, “I don’t know, but I can finally breathe now.”
“That back nine felt like the longest back nine of my entire life. It was a little bit of a grind on the back nine, but I’m happy to get the win.”
“I was definitely starting to feel it on the back nine, just the nerves setting in. It’s a major. It’s everything that I’ve always wanted as a little girl, to lift that major trophy.
“As I said, I can finally breathe now and just enjoy the moment because I was definitely really nervous. I feel sick to my stomach.”
The world No. 1 is the daughter of former Czech tennis player Petr Korda, who took home the men’s singles championship at the 1988 Australian Open.
She won her first major tournament in 2021 at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. In January of the same year, she won the LPGA Drive On Championship, her first championship of the year.
After taking a seven-week vacation, she came back to win three events in three weeks, including the T-Mobile Match Play final, when she defeated Ireland’s Leona Maguire.
