SAMUEL KWAME BOADU – MOBILE MONEY WILL NOT REPLACE BANKING BUT COMPLEMENT IT

The Founding Chief Executive Officer of SamBoad Business Group Limited, Samuel Kwame Boadu, says the explosion of mobile money services pose no threat to the future of the banking sector in the country

“Mobile money service is a transaction enabler, it is not banking so the traditional importance of banking will not be replaced by the upsurge of the use of mobile money service,” Samuel Kwame Boadu said.

In an interview on Zoom with Yahoo Finance  which he was a guest speaker, Samuel Kwame Boadu observed notwithstanding the successes chalked by mobile money services there is no way the role of the banking sector will be overtaken it.

Mobile Money is a service provided by most mobile telecommunication companies in the country that gives subscribers and non-subscribers among others, the opportunity to send and receive money promptly from every part of the country.

He added that he remembers for the first quarter of 2016 or 2017, mobile money services recorded a 100 per cent value of transactions compared to the same period of last year.

Figures from the Bank of Ghana showed a total of GHC13.7 billion worth of transactions were recorded in the first quarter of that year alone, while the total value of transaction for 2015 to 2016 was GHC35 billion up from the GHC12 billion recorded in 2014 to 2015.

The situation has aroused fears that it mobile money will soon take over the banking system in the country.

Despite the fears since SamBoad Business Group Limited operates an activity called “SamBoad Micro-Credit Services, Samuel Kwame Boadu believes mobile money will become transaction process enabler in the delivery of goods and services, and complement the effort of the traditional role of the banking sector. “It will however not replace the traditional role of the banking sector but work hand in hand to give customers better services they deserve,” he added.
