Together with Bill Lawrence and Jason Segel, who starred in the Emmy-nominated series, the breakout Ted Lasso co-created the Apple TV+ series.
At this point, Goldstein’s persona is being kept secret behind the therapist’s desk.
Shrinking centers on Segel’s grieving therapist Jimmy, who begins to defy professional norms by telling his clients what he really believes. The logline says, “Jimmy lost his wife and wants to try a new approach to his loss, but it’s not clear how this will help others.”
Lily Gladstone and Martin Scorsese’s Rome Toasts Goldstein has continued to work behind the scenes as an executive producer and co-creator of the program. After his part in Ted Lasso, he will be performing again on an Apple TV+ series with his next guest role.
After a few episodes, the actor—who had originally signed on to the Jason Sudeikis-starring series as a writer—saw himself as Roy Kent and suggested to the other writers that he take on the part, which would go on to win him two straight Emmys.
But the multihyphenate clarified that he didn’t feel the same way about doing that with Shrinking in a prior interview with THR. He remarked, “This just felt like I was writing for these guys, and I was very happy with that,” he said. “It didn’t occur to me on this one.”
Additionally, he disclosed that he doesn’t see many differences between writing and performing. “It’s just that one happens behind closed doors and one happens on camera,” Goldstein explained. “They’re both like, ‘How do I feel? What am I trying to do? How am I relating to the people in this room?’ You’re just imagining it when you’re writing.”
Shrinking’s second season is presently in development. One of Harrison Ford’s first regular roles in a TV show, the series starred Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell, Michael Urie, and Luke Tennie.
